DSC has been building great software since 1990. And we've been building web-based applications since 1999. During that time, we've learned about what works well and what doesn't.

When we started building web applications there was no Ruby on Rails, no J2EE, no TomCat. We built applications using the Java Web Server from SUN and quickly realised that we needed a framework to save having to repeat the basic "plumbing" of every web application. So we extracted a framework from our applications and called it uView. These days we use Ruby on Rails for most projects. When we need to use Java for a particular reason we usually still use a version of uView, though it's been updated to use all the fabulous libraries that are now available. uView can't compete with Ruby on Rails for speed of development, but it comes closer than anything else we've tried.

There's nothing like experience when it comes to applications that are going to be put in front of lots of users, over whom you have no control. This is exactly the situation with public web applications. If you've a popular web site it's not easy to trial run your application or changes to it, so you need to know what works and what doesn't in advance. With years of application development and deployment behind us, we have this knowledge already, so your site doesn't become a test bed for new ideas. We're confident: our applications just work.
