Many software development companies will choose the technology with which to implement your application based on what they're currently pushing. At DSC we try instead to choose the best tool for the job.

There are some huge advantages to Ruby on Rails over something like Java. But Java has its place too. We've used both, extensively. We also have experience of bringing the two together, to try to get the benefits of both.

The same can be said of databases. Some development companies won't touch anything but Oracle, because they don't care what the database licenses cost. After all, the development licenses are free. Also they'll choose Oracle because it adds a certain gravitas to their application; they think it makes them look like "heavyweights". For some applications, Oracle is the right choice. But some types of application are ideally suited to something like MySQL. And there are other choices between these extreme ends of the spectrum. Don't choose a development company that uses a database to make them look good, choose one that selects the right database for your project. And one that has the experience to make it work well.
